Be A Part Of It

2020 Heartbeats

The heartbeat moments below represent a few of the key opportunities to step up and engage in accelerating climate action so that we can meet the 2020 climate turning point.

FRIDAYS | Global

The #FridaysforFuture global climate strikes are an opportunity for school children and adults alike to raise the voice of urgency for climate action and push leaders to follow the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The movement will reach new heights in September 2019, with a week-long global strike during the UN Climate Action Summit and New York Climate Week.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2019 | New York City

The UN Secretary-General's Summit in September 2019 is the ideal moment for Leaders to confirm, in good company, that their countries will “step up” in 2020 with higher ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement. Secretary-General António Guterres has asked countries to come with firm plans on their long term decarbonisation strategies, including ending new coal by 2020, taxing polluters not people and ending fossil fuel subsidies.

DECEMBER 2-13, 2019 | Santiago

This year's annual UN climate summit is a chance to build on the momentum from the UN Secretary Genera's Climate Action Summit in September in New York, and continue to push governments, businesses, financiers, cities and regions and others to bolster their commitments. The Paris Agreement asks governments to strengthen their contributions, and set out goals for 2050, by the end of 2020, but more action is needed from all parts of the economy in order to meet its goals for limiting the temperature rise. The venue, in Chile, will put a spotlight on countries that are most vulnerable to climate change.
